Communion - The Miracle of Lanciano
One day this past week, I dropped by the nearby convenience store, and found two friends, one Jewish and the other Episcopal, discussing the Eucharist. They were discussing how if transubstantiation does occur, then why is there no physical evidence of cell structure, blood type or similar.
I mentioned the Miracle of Lanciano and the results of tests showing the Eucharist had turned into smooth heart tissue with a universal AB blood type. Neither had heard of Lanciano. Most likely, neither have you.
Let's set the stage. It's around the year 750 and we are in central Italy. The Koran has been written down and Islamic armies have already swept across Northern Africa and entered Spain. Benedict is still alive in Germany. The Second Council of Nicea is yet to occur. In Mexico, Teotihuacan is starting its collapse.
In a little non-descript church, Legontian, a monk, is saying the liturgy of the Eucharist and has doubts concerning the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. In reponse to Legontian's doubt's, God allows the Eucharist to physically change form from bread into human flesh and from wine into human blood. Much to surprise of Logontian and the villagers. Legontian is strengthened in his faith and goes on to sainthood. The resulting flesh and blood is kept and venerated to the present age.
In the 1970's and 1980's, several series of scientific tests were conducted on the flesh and blood of Lanciano, with surprising results:
Lest one thinks that Lanciano is a one-time, freak event, there have been at least 142 similarly documented Eucharistic miracles.
At a later visit that day, my Jewish friend asked why if the Eucharist is the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ, why is Communion not cannibalism, which is clearly forbidden in Leviticus? We'll discuss that issue in a future post later this month.

In the 1970's and 1980's, several series of scientific tests were conducted on the flesh and blood of Lanciano, with surprising results:
- The Flesh is real Flesh. The Blood is real Blood.
The Flesh and the Blood belong to the human species.
The Flesh consists of the muscular tissue of the heart.
In the Flesh we see present in section: the myocardium, the endocardium, the vagus nerve and also the left ventricle of the heart for the large thickness of the myocardium.
The Flesh is a "HEART" complete in its essential structure.
The Flesh and the Blood have the same blood-type: AB (Blood-type identical to that which Prof. Baima Bollone uncovered in the Holy Shroud of Turin).
In the Blood there were found proteins in the same normal proportions (percentage-wise) as are found in the sero-proteic make-up of the fresh normal blood.
In the Blood there were also found these minerals: chlorides, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, sodium and calcium.
The preservation of the Flesh and of the Blood, which were left in their natural state for twelve centuries and exposed to the action of atmospheric and biological agents, remains an extraordinary phenomenon.
Lest one thinks that Lanciano is a one-time, freak event, there have been at least 142 similarly documented Eucharistic miracles.
