2009 National Bible Bee to Encourage Scripture Memorization
Here's a good idea whose time has come. The 2009 National Bible Bee is a brand new program to encourage and motivate children to memorize scripture. The competition will begin with Local Contests in communities nationwide on September 12, 2009. The top 100 finalists from each age group will advance to the National Contest in Washington, D.C. to compete on November 5-6, 2009. Curriculum for the chuldren and their coaches will be released in May 2009.
Basically, the Bee will consist of a written test and an oral round. There are two versions of the written test for each age group. In each oral round, contestants will be given 12 minutes within which to answer multiple questions, some of which will be Bible Memory questions and some of which will be Bible Knowledge questions. When answering Bible Memory questions, contestants will state the reference to a passage before and after reciting the passage. Points are deducted for words that are omitted or erroneous and for answers that are incomplete.
As part of the enrollment process, contestants must specify one of four versions of the Bible from which to quote Bible passages in response to Bible Memory Questions: King James Version, New King James Version, New American Standard Bible, and New International Version. Bible Knowledge questions will be phrased in such a way that the version studied by the contestants will not affect their ability to answer.
Volunteers are needed to start Local Planning Committees. Local Planning Committees are guided in their preparations by a Local Contest Procedure Manual, as well as the assistance of Bible Bee Event Planners. If you are interested in hosting a local Bible Bee or starting a Local Planning Committee, please call one of the Bible Bee event planners toll-free at 888-324-2532.
As this is the first year and no one is familiar with the contest, anyone could win. Wouldn't it be something if a Catholic child were to win!
