Baptists Observing Advent
Today, we visited out local Lifeway store. Lifeway is the commercial arm of the Southern Baptist Convention. So, there we were circling the store, when just past the Bibles, we spotted Advent candles on the top shelf. Advent candles in a Baptist bookstore, who knew?
We inquired of a clerk stocking Christmas decorations if there were any Advent wreaths for the forementioned candles. She replied that "No" she didn't recall seeing any. Imagine our suprise moments later when returning down the center aisle we found an end-cap displaying not only more Advent candles, but Advent wreaths and two advent books. One of the books was actually a pre-advent book and listed activities to be followed during the four weeks of November in order to prepare oneself for the liturgical season of Advent.
Growing up in the American South, I don't recall any observance of Advent among the many Baptists of the day. Certainly, those King James Only purists would have known of Advent as the dates for Advent Sunday were included in the Almanac inside the original 1611 King James Bible as we have previously noted here at CAS.
I would love to hear from Baptists regarding your congregations observance of Advent. Please feel free to comment below.

My church observes a truncated form of the liturgical calendar. As such, we do observe Advent yearly. I have found the calendar to be a powerful witness to the gospel. Once I explained to my people that the intention of the church calendar was to ensure the gospel message was communicated/taught throughout the 12-month cycle, they quickly embraced it.
