Evangelical Christians Adopting Advent
Apparently, we were on to something when we noted the presence of advent candles, wreaths, and books in our local Lifeway Christian Store. Its seems that not only Baptists, but evangelical Christians in general are re-discovering the liturgical season of Advent. Perhaps some have read our post on the original 1611 KJV Bible and discovered that it contained an almanac givingthe dates for the First Sunday of Advent.
USA Today followed our post with their story on "Evangelicals Adopting Advent." They report:
"Popular evangelical authors are offering readings and composing prayers for the Advent season. And Family Christian Stores, the nation's largest Christian retailer with 301 stores nationwide, has seen sales of Advent-related items climb 35% in the past year."
Wanna-be missional, reformed evangelical and thawing-out seminary grad Jeff Wright has assembled about a dozen links to non-Catholic Advent resources on his Pursuing Truth blog. Among Jeff's links are online Advent devotionals from Lutheran Hour Ministries and Discovering the Truth About Santa Claus from the St. Nicholas Center. Jeff plans to add more links as he discovers additional Advent resources. If you know of any, please take time to comment on his blog.
Perhaps after spending four weeks preparing to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus, these same eangelicals will feel shortchanged by a one day celebration of Christmas and re-discover that Christmas is actually a 12 day liturgical season with similar opportunities for prayer and to fall deeper in love with Christ.
Of course, there are those evangelical Christians that see Advent as 100% Catholic and will reject the opportunity to grow in prayer solely for its Catholic roots. We fully expect that Ken Silva hear of the trend and add Advent observance to his growing list of activitites contributing to the apostacy of the "Christian" church.

While I am deeply moved by your loving example, I must tell you I am not an evangelical. peace...
Hey Timothy. Thanks for the link and the call for other resources. I'd be glad to have folks share some links at Pursuing Truth. Its been interesting to read the comments section of the USA TODAY article talking about evangelicals becoming either Catholic or pagan by observing Advent ;). I share your hope that Christians will use this season to "fall deeper in love with Christ." Take care.
Pursuing Truth,
Jeff Wright
