Arabic Bible

Perhaps we are being overly optimistic, but we have gone ahead and installed an Arabic bible in our free e-Sword Bible study software. We used the Arabic Smith & Van Dyke Bible freely available on the e-Sword site. After downloading and extracting the bible file to our e-Sword installation, we fired up e-Sword and... There it was. The Bible in Arabic. Wow!

We went into our settings and chose to compare the Arabic SVD version with an an English version. Clicking on the compare tab, there they were. A verse in Arabic displayed above a verse in English. Cool!

So. Where to begin? Taking a cue from Julie Andrew's character Maria in the Sound of Music, we decided to start at the very beginning, a very good place to start. Genesis 1:1.

Now for those unfamiliar, Arabic is read from right to left. Peering at the letters on the right side of the screen we noted something peculiar. We could read the first word! Its was "Fee"! We learned "Fee" just a few lessons back. "Fee" means "in", as in "In the beginning..." Is that just not awesome?

Looking through the verse, we also recognized "Allah" (God) and "wa" (and). We then set about trying to transliterate the verse from Arabic in an attempt to pronounce the verse in Arabic. We were fortunate and found a transliteration of Genesis 1:1 on an Islamic site, and discovered that we were very close. It seems our barrier to reading the Bible in Arabic is vocabulary, or rather the lack of it.

    فِي الْبَدْءِ خَلَقَ اللهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ،

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
    Genesis 1:1
