Annointed One has banned torture and approved using federal funds to kill foreign babies before birth. The man of peace may be under the impression that by killing millions of Christian and non-Christian babies of color in his ancestral home of Africa, the United States will be spared the future embarassment of either responding to religious black-on-black genocides and/or the shame of watching hordes of predominently white U.S. soldiers slaying freedom fighters of color in the international media.
Scathingly brilliant, don't you think? Pay people today to kill future foreign populations, so we don't have to pay with more American treasure and lives later. Future generations of Americans will enjoy budget surpluses and will rarely have to serve in the Peace Services. Utopian society at last.
Thou shalt not kill.

Inauguration fever is at full peak. World events have been supplanted by 24/7 coverage of all things inauguration with nothing too mundane for an exclusive vignette. The
list of religious invited to pray at the many events seems to just about cover all the major American faith groups and then some.
While many Americans will watch and hear the many prayers being offered, few will likely realize the historical significance. While the Bible story of Saul annointing Samuel tells us that the Judeo-Christian practice of annointing rulers is over 2,500 years old, the Western tradition dates only from Pepin in about 749. Pepin sought the approval of Pope Zachary for Pepin's overthrow of Childeric III.
Better known is the coronation of Charlemagne by Pope Leo III on Christmas Evening, 800, and made famous in the fresco by painter Raphael. The coronation solidified Charlemagne as the most powerful leader of Western Europe.
In more modern times, we have the example of Napoleon. Napoleon brought Pope Pius VII to Paris for his coronation as Emperor of the French. Napoleon took the crown from the hands of the pope, crowned himself and then crowned his empress.
While the tradition of inaugural prayers dates only from 1937 and the inauguration of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the tradition of Presidents presenting themselves to the Pope dates from Woodrow Wilson in 1920. In the past 89 years,
American presidents have visited or been visited by the Pope 25 times. As the world recognized head of the Western Christian Church, these Papal vists serve as a modern annointing that legitimizes the authority of the President. It will be interesting to see if Obama continues the tradition and the timing of the visit (early-, mid-, or late-term).
So, the American inaugural ceremony is actually a remnant of the old coronation ceremony and the long list of American religious participating in the inauguration of Obama constitutes the annointing of the king and solidifies his authority and legitimacy.
God save the king!

It seems that Senator Obama, the soon to be President Elect
1 may be unchurched.
Allegedly, in the three weeks since the national elections, the senator has decided to workout on Sundays, but has not attended church. This is a marked change from past presidents who largely attended church both before and after their inagurations. We and other Christians find this behavior troubling as the senator is not modeling behaviors for the current and future generations of American Christian youth. This strikes us as a distinct lack of moral leadership. What is a parent to answer when a teenager points out that even the President skips church, so what's the big deal?
When asked about the senator's Sunday behavior, an aide stated:
"
Because they have a great deal of respect for places of worship, they do not want to draw unwelcome or inappropriate attention to a church not used to the attention their attendance would draw."Attention hasn't seemed to have been an impediment to past Presidents. Why suddenly now? There are any number of ministers, priests, rabbis, and/or imams that would make "housecalls" and hold a private worship service for the Obamas and their transition staff.
Already at least one pro-Obama site has stepped in to the senator's defense. The site notes that the reporters "ignored numerous reports of Bush's infrequent church attendance over the past eight years, as well as his reported lack of membership in a Washington congregation."
Since when does poor behavior by another mature adult excuse the behavior of another mature adult? Where does one find that teaching in scripture? One doesn't.
The current defense of the senator's Sunday behavior, or lack thereof, is to claim that the senator has not yet "shopped" for a church in Washington D.C.. To which we would ask the good senator, where have you been attending church the past two years that you have represented your state in the senate? Surely the senator has remained in D.C. over a weekend while the senate was in session. Where did the senator attend church previously?
Personally, when someone tells us about "shopping" for a church, we would ask where is that taught in scripture. No where in scripture does one find the teaching to "shop" for a church. Shopping for a church is unbiblical.
Numerous D.C. area ministers have offered to host the Obamas at their church. Most notably, the Episcopal Church has offered the National Cathedral citing their "inclusiveness". With the recent layoffs of personnel at the National Cathedral, we have no doubts that they would like the first family as congregants and the security funding that may accompany the family. The cathedral is in need of repair and maintenance.
In closing, we ask the senator to reconsider his behavior and the message it conveys to current and future Christians. We ask that you, our readers, take a few moments right now to join us and other readers in praying for the senator and for a change in behavior.

1 For the civics challenged: During the November elections, the American people voted for their state's electors. The electors have yet to vote, thus Obama is not yet the President Elect. It seems safe that he will be elected by the electors, unless the Supreme Court determines that he is ineligible due to not being a natural born citizen.
2 Also, in the interest of full disclosure, we did not vote for either Senator Obama nor Senator McCain, but voted our conscience for the best Christian candidate on our ballot. Our state went for McCain's electors by a large margin.]

Christianity Today has cobbled together a very clever electoral map depicting the evangelical Christian vote for the 2008 election. Christianity today used
CNN's 2008 election results for the data. Hat tip to Kendall Harmon at
TitusOneNine.
Click View Larger Map to open a larger map in a new page.View Larger MapThe darker the shade of red, the fewer the number of evangelical Christians voting for McCain. Pink depicts heavy McCain support. Deep red depicts lowest McCain support. There are no blue states as Obama did not carry a mjority of evangelicals in any state.
If only there were a map of the 2008 Catholic electoral vote, perhaps many of those non-attending Catholics might reconsider practicing their Christian faith.
